The first edition of the RGB Balkans Art Festival will be held in one of the spaces of the Palace of Culture in Iași, Romania.

The 26th of October 1860 is a memorable date for the Art Museum of Iaşi as it represents the “birthday” of the first museum institution of Romania. Throughout its existence, the Art Museum had various premises, its valuable patrimony being housed in the Palace of Culture since 1957.

The museum was organized on the basis of the available heritage items, treasured throughout its 155 years of existence, was structured in three galleries:
- Modern Romanian Art Gallery - where the displaying was chronological, from the late eighteenth century up to the Interwar period;
- Contemporary Romanian Art Gallery, where a special place was assigned to the School of Fine Arts of Iaşi;
- European Art Gallery – structured according to the national schools: Italian, Spanish, Flemish - Dutch, German, Austrian, Russian, Polish.

The core around which the patrimony of the Art Museum grew year after year is represented by the 12 paintings of the Las Marismas collection, purchased by 1848 revolutionist Scarlat Vârnav in Paros, and later donated with the intention to “set the foundations of a museum of paintings in the capital of Moldavia, to his eternal memory”. The decision of founding an art museum in Iaşi, having painter George Panaiteanu Bardasare as first director, was welcomed by the intellectual circles of the time, that also contributed to the enrichment of the patrimony thereof. Thus, after less than a year since its inauguration, in April 1861, the Art Gallery enlarged its patrimony with the precious collection of Costache Negri, who had provided that “the paintings should remain forever in Iaşi”.
During the third decade of the 20th century, within the only four year-direction assured by painter Ștefan Dimitrescu, the Museum collection was increased with a considerable number of paintings signed by Romanian artists including: George Petraşcu, Theodor Pallady, Nicolae Tonitza, Camil Ressu, Nicolae Dărăscu Sabin Popp, Octav Băncilă, Aurel Băeşu and others.

Today, the Art Museum of Iaşi treasures up approximately 10,000 works of art: paintings, engravings, sculptures, which will be presented through exhibitions to the art loving public.

At present, the public can see the following exhibitions:

“Masters of the Romanian Interwar Art in the Collections of the Art Museum of Iaşi“ is meant bring to the attention of the art-loving public famous names of Romanian art, through works signed by Octav Băncilă, Ștefan Dimitrescu, George Petraşcu, Nicolae Tonitza, Francis Șirato, Theodor Pallady, Camil Ressu, Iosif Iser, Gheorghe Anghel, Dimitrie Paciurea, Corneliu Medrea, Ștefan Popescu, Samuel Müntzer, Otto Briese, Rodica Maniu, Nutzi Acontz, Marius Bunescu, Cecilia Cuţescu-Stork, Nicolae Dărăscu, Lucia Demetriade-Bălăcescu, Micaela Eleutheriade, Dumitru Ghiaţă, Lucian Grigorescu, Elena Popea, Sabin Popp, Jean Al. ”Master of Romanian Interwar Art in the Collections of the Art Museum of Iași” - Interwar art can be considered the golden age of Romanian art. Artists of the Interwar period created masterpieces, veritable benchmarks of Romanian art, expressing themselves through forms of contemporary European artistic movements such as post-impressionism or trends of the avant-garde. Out of this valuable patrimony, the displayed selection of works illustrates both the major characteristics of the Romanian Interwar movement as a whole as well as the creation of each of the selected artists.

and other short-term exhibitions whose details can be checked in the Events section.
